VB Weekend Preview: #8 Lady Vols Travel to LSU, Texas A&M

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The eighth-ranked Tennessee Lady Vols are back on the road this weekend, taking on LSU and Texas A&M during the penultimate weekend of the regular season.

The Big Orange kicks off the slate Friday night against the Tigers. The contest begins at 8 p.m. ET and will be streamed on SEC Network+. Tennessee rounds out the trip with a Sunday afternoon matchup against the Aggies. First serve is set for 3 p.m. ET and will be televised on SEC Network.

This will be the second meeting of the season between Tennessee and its two opponents this weekend. UT swept both foes at Food City Center. Against the Tigers, graduate student right side Morgahn Fingall led the Big Orange with 17 kills while hitting .593 and six digs and two blocks. The Big Orange out hit LSU .444 to .212.

During its match against the Aggies, UT won the battle in kills (40-38), hitting percentage (.349-.213), assists (36-33), digs (46-29) and blocks (6-3). Texas A&M entered the contest as the nation’s second-ranked team in blocks per set finished with just three on the day, while the Aggies’ offense had 15 attacking errors and 15 service errors.

Winners in eight of their last 10 matches, the Lady Vols moved up to eighth in this week’s AVCA rankings, marking the second-highest rank in program history.

The only higher ranking the Big Orange has ever achieved was sixth in the final poll of the 2005 rankings, following Tennessee’s Final Four run. Since that came after the postseason, UT’s eighth-place ranking this year marks the program’s best placement during the regular season ever.

The Lady Vols (21-3, 12-2 SEC) boast one of the NCAA’s top offenses, ranking inside the top 10 nationally in kills per set (2nd/14.65), assists per set (4th/13.45) and hitting percentage (7th/.299). Those marks also stand as the best in the SEC.

UT has swept 14 of its opponents this season, including seven conference foes. The Big Orange currently sits in second place in the SEC standings—just one match back from first—and owns the highest AVCA ranking in the league. With the victory last Friday night against Georgia, Tennessee reached 20 wins this season, marking the third time the Lady Vols accomplished that feat under head coach Eve Rackham Watt.

After this weekend, Tennessee returns home for senior night next Wednesday at 5 p.m. The Big Orange hosts Mississippi State before then hitting the road to take on South Carolina on Saturday at 1 p.m. Both…
