VIETNAM SEAL SECOND WIN WITH STRAIGHT SETS ON SINGAPORE

Manila, Philippines, May 23, 2024 – Vietnam rushed toward their second victory in Pool B of the 2024 AVC Challenge Cup for Women after securing straight sets 3-0 (25-8, 29-27, 25-10) against Singapore on Thursday at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen led all scorers in the field (13 points) but was quick to remark that the victory is indeed the team’s effort.

“As we played without our captain, it has a big effect on us for sure. So we all share the work and the load. We all deserve to be acknowledged in this victory,” she said.

The defending champions surged to a swift start, launching service winners to set the tone of the match. They also posted better formation and timing of their blocks, which prevented any scoring runs from their opponents in the opening set.

Singapore were off to a good start in the second set, as the scoreboard 7-3 to their favor. Sofi Azni played the middle while hitter Lai Tzak Hshin Natalie connected in several sequences. The Singaporeans posted better coverage on the floor and set up their counter-attack decently. They showed that they could sustain lengthy rallies and display their resilience in transition.

Singapore prolonged the second set, showing vast improvement in their play. However, hitter Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen proved to be one of Vietnam’s main options in offense and helped seal the second set for the titleholders.
