The Women’s Volleyroos are currently competing in the AVC Challenge Cup in Philippines with the men’s tournament set to commence on June 2, and the Australian team to compete in Bahrain has now been selected.

The team is led by Luke Perry and has been placed in Pool D alongside Chinese Taipei and Vietnam. Australia defeated Vietnam in their pool round clash at last year’s tournament where they finished fifth, while Chinese Taipei came in ninth after going down to Vietnam in the Round of 12.

The experienced lineup features 11 players who contested last year’s tournament with Perry hoping the side can move the rankings.

“It’s exciting to be back competing for Australia and we’re hoping to improve on last year’s fifth place result,” he said. “We won three of our four matches in that tournament and with so many of the squad back again, we know what it takes to compete at this event.”

New men’s Volleyroos head coach Dan Ilott is excited by the addition of some new players in the team which add another element to the 2023 side.

“I believe that we have a nice mix of experienced senior players and some very talented younger players starting to make their mark in the senior team,” said Ilott. “Our goal is to improve with every game, and if we can play our best volleyball together, we have the capacity to have a very successful tournament.”

National Performance Director Craig Marshall said he feels positive about where the men’s Volleyroos are headed and is looking forward to seeing how they perform in Bahrain.

“As we look to 2032, it is pleasing to have so many developing athletes getting the opportunity to represent Australia on the world stage,” he said. “We’re excited to see what this group of talented athletes can achieve.”

In addition to team staff, Julian Coburn will be the Australian referee representative at the tournament.

The 2024 AVC Challenge Cup for Men takes place in Isa Town, Bahrain from June 2-9 with Australia in action from the opening day of competition.
