Des Moines, IA – The Grand View women’s volleyball team kicked off homecoming weekend celebrations on Friday night as it hosted Clarke University in a conference battle. The Vikings got the weekend started in the right direction as they defeated the Pride in four sets with scores of 25-22, 25-14, 20-25, and 25-15.
Set 1: Grand View University 25 l Clarke University 22
The Vikings and Pride started out the match going back and forth in the early stages of the first set, but it was Clarke that gained a slight advantage after back-to-back kills put Grand View down 8-11. Shortly after, the Vikings then went on the offensive and took control with a 5-0 scoring run. Grand View maintained a four-point lead down the stretch until Clarke came back and made it a one-point contest at the 23-22 mark. The Vikings put an end to the comeback attempt, however, and won the final two points of the set.
Set 2: Grand View University 25 l Clarke University 14
In the second set, it was another back-and-forth beginning between the Vikings and the Pride with the two squads drawing even at 8-8. Grand View earned a bit of breathing room over the next few points by taking advantage of some Clarke errors and went ahead 16-11. A 5-0 scoring streak, which featured two service aces from Melodee Schulte (JR/Kaneohe, HI), pushed the Viking lead out to 22-12 and forced a timeout from the Pride. After the timeout, it didn’t take much longer for the Vikings to close out the set as they sealed it with a 3-0 scoring streak.
Set 3: Grand View University 20 l Clarke University 25
The third set saw Grand View come out a little slow and it fell behind slightly after a service error made the score 8-10. The Pride were able to rally off a pair of 3-0 scoring runs during the middle stages of the set and that increased the deficit all the way to 13-19. The closest the Vikings were able to pull within was three points at the 17-20 mark, thanks to an ace by Chevy Wagner-Chun (JR/Waianae, HI), but the Pride lead was too much to overcome.
Set 4: Grand View University 25 l Clarke University 15
The Vikings got out to a much better start in the fourth set as a 4-0 scoring run, highlighted by a pair of service aces from Sydney Beasley (SO/Darlington, WI), put the Vikings in front, 9-6.
