Des Moines, IA – The Grand View women’s volleyball team returned home for a midweek conference matchup on Tuesday night as it hosted William Penn University. The Vikings and Statesmen battled it out late into the night with the match going five sets, but it was William Penn who earned the win with scores of 19-25, 25-18, 22-25, 25-20, and 10-15.
Set 1: Grand View University 19 l William Penn University 25
The Vikings got out to a fast start as they claimed the lead right from the jump with a quick 5-0 scoring streak led by two kills from Ellie Dougherty (FR/Omaha, NE). The lead was short lived, however, as William Penn answered right back with a pair of scoring runs to go up 10-6. Grand View fought its way to even the match at the 12-12 mark and the two squads kept it close through the middle stages. Ultimately, it was a late scoring streak from the Statesmen that gave them the first set of the night.
Set 2: Grand View University 25 l William Penn University 18
The beginning of the second set saw Grand View and William Penn match each other all the way to the 9-9 mark. The Vikings gained a little breathing room when they made it 14-11 after Dougherty slammed home two more kills, but the Statesmen once again came back and took the lead at 14-15. A few points later, with Grand View back in front at 19-18, the Vikings offense went on a surge and closed out the set with a 6-0 scoring run to tie the match. Taylor Carey (SR/Waukee, IA) and Peyton Cook (SO/Underwood, IA) provided the offense on the closing run as Carey recorded two kills and Cook scored a service ace.
Set 3: Grand View University 22 l William Penn University 25
The competitive battle between the Vikings and the Statesmen continued in the third set as the teams drew even at the 11-11 point. After this, however, is where William Penn found some momentum and took the lead, 11-16, with a 6-0 scoring streak. Grand View was able to pull within two points a couple of times, most notably on a service ace by Alesha Johnson (JR/Council Bluffs, IA) which made the score 22-24, but William Penn won the following point to end the set.
Set 4: Grand View University 25 l William Penn University 20
