Des Moines, IA – The Grand View women’s volleyball team took on a non-conference opponent in Northwestern College on Tuesday night is it continued its 2022 season campaign. The Vikings put a good fight against the No. 7 ranked Raiders, but ultimately fell in three sets with scores of 23-25, 17-25, and 22-25.
Set 1: Grand View University 23 l Northwestern College 25
Grand View found itself facing an early deficit as 4-0 scoring run from Northwestern placed the Vikings down 3-8. The Vikings were able to mount an impressive comeback, however, during the middle stage of the set to completely erase the deficit and take the lead. Grand View capitalized off some Northwestern miscues and scored on kills by Sydney Beasley (SO/Darlington, WI) and Emily Box (JR/West Point, IA) that charged a 6-0, which flipped the score from 8-11 to 13-11 in favor of the Vikings. Grand View was able to maintain a three-point advantage following another scoring run, capped on a service ace by Alesha Johnson (JR/Council Bluffs, IA), which forced a Northwestern timeout at the 21-18 mark. After the timeout, it was the Raiders who went on the offensive and eventually took the set after they scored seven of the following nine points.
Set 2: Grand View University 17 l Northwestern College 25
It was another slow start for the Vikings in the second set as Northwestern charged ahead, 4-12. Grand View did make a slight dent in the Northwestern lead with a 5-0 scoring run that made the score 11-16 in the middle portion of the set. Ultimately, the comeback was denied for Grand View as a 4-0 scoring streak from the Raiders squashed any momentum the Vikings had going.
Set 3: Grand View University 22 l Northwestern College 25
In the third, the Vikings and Raiders battled back-and-forth with the two teams coming to a draw at 10-10. The competitive battle remained over the middle course of the set and Grand View found itself only down by one after a kill from Taylor Carey (SR/Waukee, IA) put the score at 15-16. A few moments later, the Vikings were able to pull within one of Northwestern again as Rylie Olson (SR/Osage, IA) scored a kill to make it 20-21. Despite two more kills from Olson down the stretch, the Vikings couldn’t overcome the Raiders and lost the set to end the match.
