Marshall, MO – The Grand View men’s volleyball team pulled off one of its most difficult victories of the season on Friday night in a come from behind win over Missouri Valley College. The Vikings dropped the first two sets of the match, but then rallied three set wins in a row and defeated Missouri Valley with scores of 22-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-23 and 15-11.
Set 1: Grand View University 22 l Missouri Valley College 25
Grand View got down in the early goings when the score hit 6-10 but responded with a 3-0 scoring streak to pull within one of Missouri Valley to open the first set after a kill by Leonardo Annichini (SO/Verona, Italy). Missouri Valley eventually stretched its lead out to five at the end of the middles stages when Grand View committed an attack error to make the score 15-20. A kill by Daniel Galili (FR/Shomrat, Israel) saw the Vikings pull within one at 20-21, but Missouri Valley went on to win the set a few moments later.
Set 2: Grand View University 21 l Missouri Valley College 25
The two squads opened the second set in a tight contest when Oscar Manana (SR/Bronx, NY) scored a kill to put the score at 9-10. A 3-0 run from Missouri Valley made the score 13-17, however, Grand View cut the deficit to one a few points later as it capitalized on some errors by Missouri Valley. MVC ultimately kept its lead the rest of the way and forced Grand View into a 0-2 hole.
Set 3: Grand View University 25 l Missouri Valley College 23
The Vikings began the third set with a hot start due to a 5-0 scoring run, capped on a kill by Manana, which gave them an early 7-3 lead. The two squads traded points for the duration of the middle stages, but Missouri Valley pulled to within a point of Grand View after a 3-0 scoring streak at the 20-19 mark. The set eventually became tied at 23-23, but the Vikings took the set win after back-to-back errors on Missouri Valley.
Set 4: Grand View University 25 l Missouri Valley College 23
Another good start from the Grand View offense put the Vikings up by three at 8-5 when Manana added another kill to his stat line. Once again though, Missouri Valley was able to string together a few points and tied the set at 15-15. The Vikings eventually built their lead back up to three when Daniel Wong (SO/Campbell, CA) registered a kill to make it a 20-17 set. In the end, it was Wong who won the set for Grand View with another kill and tie the match at two sets…
