Vikings Split Matches to Close Out Grand View Women’s Volleyball Tournament

Des Moines, IA – The Grand View women’s volleyball team continued its weekend at the Grand View Women’s Volleyball tournament splitting a pair of Saturday matches. The Vikings first took down Cardinal Stritch University in a sweep with scores of 25-23, 28-26, and 25-19. Grand View then lost to Rocky Mountain College in three sets 18-25, 18-25 and 13-25.

Set 1: Grand View University 25 l Cardinal Stritch University 23

The Vikings found their groove early in the first set and jumped out to a four-point lead at the 8-4 mark following a 3-0 scoring run that featured an ace by Alesha Johnson (JR/Council Bluffs, IA) and kills from Sydney Beasley (SO/Darlington, WI) and Rylie Olson. Grand View stretched its lead further with another 3-0 scoring streak, highlighted by consecutive kills by Emily Box (JR/West Point, IA), to set the score at 14-7. Cardinal Stritch did make a dent in the Grand View lead with a 6-0 run to make it 23-20, but the Vikings held on to take the set.

Set 2: Grand View University 28 l Cardinal Stritch University 26

The second set saw Grand View and Cardinal Stritch trade opening scoring runs until the teams drew even at 10-10. The middle stage of the set continued the back-and-forth action with the Vikings jumping in front, 16-14, but then the Wolves countered at took the lead, 19-20. Grand View and Cardinal Stritch drew even once again at 26-26 but thanks to back-to-back kills from Olson and Taylor Carey (SR/Waukee, IA), the Vikings pulled out another set win.

Set 3: Grand View University 25 l Cardinal Stritch University 19

Grand View and Cardinal Stritch continued the same competitive action in the third set as they came to a draw at 10-10. The Vikings were finally able to breakthrough with a massive 6-0 scoring run to make the score 18-14. Using that momentum, it wasn’t long after that Box and Carey secured the sweep by teaming up for a block.

Key Players…

On offense, Rylie Olson (SR/Osage, IA) led the way for Grand View with 13 kills. Sydney Beasley and Emily Box were next in line each recording 12 kills in the match. On defense, Beasley totaled an impressive six blocks and Chevy Wagner-Chun (JR/Waianae, HI) tallied 17 digs.
