Vikings Start Weekend With Win Over Baker

Des Moines, IA – The Grand View women’s volleyball team returned to conference play to get its weekend started with a showdown versus Baker University on Friday night. The Vikings were able to take care of business as they defeated the Wildcats in four sets with scores of 25-10, 25-18, 18-25, and 25-21.

Set 1: Grand View University 25 l Baker University 10

The Vikings gained an early advantage over the Wildcats in the first set behind a 4-0 scoring to make the score 10-4. A trio of Vikings in Alesha Johnson (JR/Council Bluffs, IA), Sydney Beasley (SO/Darlington, WI), and Ellie Dougherty (FR/Omaha, NE) all scored kills during that stretch while Chevy Wagner-Chun (JR/Waianae, HI) recorded a service ace. Grand View stretched its lead even further with a pair of 3-0 scoring streaks during the middle stage of the set to put the score at 17-6. The Vikings offense continued to roll all the way to the final point of the set as it managed to score seven of the final eight points.

Set 2: Grand View University 25 l Baker University 18

In the second set, Grand View was able to jump out to an early lead again following a 5-0 scoring run that saw Rylie Olson (SR/Osage, IA) secure a pair of service aces at the 9-5 mark. The serves continued to work for the Vikings when Beasley added one to her stat line to make the score 16-10. With Grand View on set point at 24-14 Baker was able to cut the lead down to 24-18 scoring four-straight points, but Beasley came through with another kill to give the set to the Vikings.

Set 3: Grand View University 18 l Baker University 25

It was another hot start for Grand View to begin the third set as it went ahead 5-2. The Wildcats were slowly able to chip away at the Vikings lead, however, over the next few points and eventually took the lead at 14-16 after a 4-0 run which forced the Vikings to call a timeout. Following the timeout, Baker still had the momentum on its side and eventually closed out the set with a 5-0 scoring streak.

Set 4: Grand View University 25 l Baker University 21

After dropping the third set, the Vikings continued the theme of gaining early leads as they jumped out to a 7-2 advantage. Grand View was able to maintain its lead this time around as the set continued and a kill from Emily Box (JR/West Point, IA) set the score at 15-9.
