Des Moines, IA – The Grand View women’s volleyball team hit its home floor for the first time this season on Friday night as they host conference rival No. 14 Central Methodist University. The Vikings gave their fans an exciting show in the home opener as they were able to sweep the Eagles in three sets with scores of 25-21, 25-22 and 25-18.
Set 1: Grand View University 25 l Central Methodist University 21
The first set began with the Vikings and Eagles trading points back and forth when Peyton Cook (SO/Underwood, IA) gave the Vikings a one-point lead at the 7-6 with a service ace. Grand View’s offense got in a groove shortly after that as it expanded its lead to 14-8 following a 6-0 scoring streak, which featured three kills by Taylor Carey (SR/Waukee, IA). Eventually Central Methodist was able to pull even with the Vikings at the 18-18 mark, but Grand View responded with another 6-0 run to give it some breathing room at 23-18. The Vikings took care of business over the next couple of points and claimed the first set of the net, 25-21.
Set 2: Grand View University 25 l Central Methodist University 22
The Vikings jumped out to an early lead in the second set behind a pair of 4-0 scoring streaks, which put the score at 12-7. Grand View was spreading the wealth all over the court as five different players scored a kill during that stretch. Through the middle stages of the set, the Eagles pulled within a couple points at multiple times, but the Vikings never let Central Methodist gain any momentum. Following a timeout and with a set victory just two points away, Grand View buckled down and took the set on consecutive points with an Emily Box (JR/West Point, IA) kill and an Eagles attack error.
Set 3: Grand View University 25 l Central Methodist University 18
Grand View started out the third set by scoring the first four points to gain some early momentum. The Vikings were able to maintain that momentum all the way to the 12-8 point when Chloe McDermott (FR/Yankton, SD) slammed home another kill for her night. Central Methodist kept battling back, however, tied the set at 15-15. A key 3-0 scoring run by the Vikings a couple of points later gave Grand View the spark it needed, and Sydney Beasley (SO/Darlington, WI) took over down the stretch as she registered four kills on the final five points to seal the victory.
