Des Moines, IA- The temperature outside may be freezing cold, but the Vikings were red hot on the volleyball court tonight. With a great all-around team performance, Grand View was able to defeat the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in three straight sets: 25- 18, 25-17, and 25-22.
Set 1: Grand View University 25| UHSP 18
The Vikings got out to a hot start thanks to a big block from Nicholas Vattier and a handful of errors from the Eutectics helping build a 5-2 lead. Gioele Lacono helped keep the scoring rolling when he got his first kill of the match, shortly followed by Daniel Wong‘s first kill of the game. After that Zeo Meyer would help lead a Vikings run with a kill, a pair of aces, and 3 assist helping stretch the lead to 15-8. Wong added another pair of kills towards the end of the set to help secure the first-set victory for the Vikings 25-18. -€‹
Set 2: Grand View University 25| UHSP 17
The Vikings kept the momentum rolling into the second set of the night as Meyer scored the first two points of the set. The Vikings fed off this energy as Nicolas Vattier and Isaiah Kalima-Izumi combined for a block. Iacono and Brendon Edgington also provided some defensive support as they got their own block, followed by Iacono’s kill. This run promoted a UHSP timeout, Vikings lead 13-3. Nickolas Lima got a kill assisted by Meyer helping get the Vikings back on track. Meyer ended the set the same way he started by being involved in 4 of the last points with 2 kills and two assists. Vikings handle business in set 2, 25- 17.
Set 3: Grand View University 25 | UHSP 22
The third set got off to a slow start as the Vikings traded points until a service error from UHSP got the ball rolling for the Vikings. Meyer got the party started with a big kill to tie the game back up at 7-7. Isaiah Kalima-Izumi made his presence known in the set as he got an ace to help grow the Viking’s lead. The Vikings were not just active on offense as Nicolas Marion and Michael Meachem combined for another block on the night. The Vikings added several more kills from a variety of players to extend their lead to 23-15. After a short run, UHSP the Vikings were able to close the game out with a kill from Meachem. Vikings end the night with a 25-22 third-set win. -€‹
