RALEIGH, N.C. – The Virginia volleyball team (8-12, 1-9 ACC) fell in straight sets (25-11, 25-18, 27-25) to NC State (16-5, 6-4 ACC) at Reynolds Coliseum on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 22).
Chloe Wilson led the Cavaliers recorded eight kills to go along with five blocks. Regan Trueblood tallied a match high 18 assists while Milan Gomillion anchored the defense with a match high 15 digs.
Set 1: NC State 25, Virginia 11
Virginia never led in the first set, as the Wolfpack leaped out to a 12-3 lead to start the match, which included a 7-0 scoring run. The Hoos could not get any momentum going from there on, hitting -0.037 percent to NC State’s .520 hitting percentage in the opening stanza. Ciera Hecht threw down three kills on three swings.
Set 2: NC State 25, Virginia 18
The Hoos claimed their first lead of the match, opening set No. 2 with a 5-3 edge over NC State and continued to stay within striking distance throughout the period. With UVA down 18-17, the Wolfpack launched on a 7-1 run, which included three service aces, sealing a 2-0 advantage over the Cavaliers. Vereisa Yon tallied three kills and two blocks in the set.
Set 3: NC State 27, Virginia 25
The Cavaliers and Wolfpack were neck and neck throughout the entire set, with neither team taking more than a three point lead. Down 19-16, Virginia leapt ahead of NC State following a blistering 7-2 run, claiming a 23-21 advantage and forcing an NC State timeout. The Wolfpack struck back by scoring three unanswered out of the break to make it match point, 24-23. Virginia fought to tie it up at 25 apiece but recorded two straight errors, dropping the final frame.
