Weekend Opens With 4-1 Loss To No. 18 Pepperdine

PHOENIX – Sun Devil Beach Volleyball came up short against No. 18 Pepperdine, falling 4-1 in the first match of the Canyon Classic hosted by GCU in Phoenix.

Arizona State (4-4, 2-2 Pac-12) dropped four pairs to No. 18 Pepperdine (7-2), but the No. 3 pair of Taryn Ames and Sarah Waters were able to grab a win for the Sun Devils. They swept their opponent, 21-15, 21-12. This was the pairs’ sixth win of the season, tying for most on the team, holding a 6-2 record.

The freshman pair of Adriana Nieves Papaleo and Carys Thomas lost an exceptionally close match on court four, losing 21-19 in the first set and 22-20 in the second, proving that they can compete with anyone. A few other sets on other courts were within a few points as well, but the Sand Devils struggled to pull off the upset down the stretch.
