Women’s Volleyball Announces Additions of Lutz and Breon

LOS ANGELES – Women’s volleyball head coach Alfee Reft has officially signed defensive specialists/liberos Kat Lutz from Del Mar, Calif. (Torrey Pines HS) and Sydney Breon from Dallas, Texas (Highland Park HS). The incoming freshmen will compete in the upcoming 2023 season.

In her two seasons on varsity, Lutz led Torrey Pines High School to a Regional Semifinal appearance in the 2022 CIF Championships (Open Division) and a Second Round appearance in 2021 (Division I). She was the team leader in digs for both seasons with a total of 973 digs over 202 sets (4.8 digs per set). Lutz was solid in the serve receive as well with 1034 receptions and only 86 errors (91.7 percent passing rate). She totaled 109 service aces.

“Kat is a dynamic back row player who has competed at the top of her age group on one of the top junior teams in the country,” Reft said. “She will be ready to enhance the level of our gym and training environment immediately, helping round out our passing and defensive line in the back court.”

Lutz was named the San Diego Sports Association’s Libero of the Year and listed to its All-CIF First Team her senior year in 2022. Lutz also brought in AVCA High School Third-Team All-America honors. In 2022, she helped the Falcons to a 27-10 record, including an 8-0 mark in the North County Conference standings.

Lutz (5’6″) played club for Wave Volleyball.

Breon was a dual threat at Highland Park High School, racking up 371 kills (3.6 kills per set) and 321 digs (3.1 digs per set) over 103 sets played her senior season in 2022. The Highland Park Senior Captain was named both an AVCA and MaxPreps Second-Team All-American after helping the Scots to a 42-3 record with a Regional Quarterfinal finish in the Texas Class 6A State Championships.

“Sydney brings a unique skill set to our team having competed and won on a national level as an outside hitter on her club teams. Her athleticism and well-rounded skill set will elevate our back court play as well as offer some potential attacking options from her position.”

Breon, standing at 5-11, was also selected by the Texas Girls Coaches Association to compete in the 2022 Texas All-Star match which features the best high school seniors in the state.
