CANTON, N.Y. – The Saint Michael’s College women’s volleyball team broke from league play by taking on Saint Lawrence University on Tuesday evening, losing a 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-15) decision in Burkman Gymnasium.

- The teams were nearly even in numerous categories, with the Purple Knights taking more attacks (90-85), while the Saints had slim advantages in digs (37-30) and aces (7-6).

THE ACTION
- Piper had two kills as the hosts led 3-0 during the opening set, but the Purple Knights forged three ties, including at 7-7 on Gallagher’s kill, before moving ahead at 9-8 on a ball-handling error. Three Saints had kills in a 6-1 response, and Saint Lawrence eventually led 23-17. Gallagher, Heinrich and Syverson dropped kills during a 5-1 Saint Michael’s run that made it 24-22, but an error gave the hosts the set.
- Four of the first five points in set No. 2 went to Saint Lawrence before consecutive errors allowed the Purple Knights to creep within 6-5. A 6-2 run gave the Saints a 12-7 lead, but back-to-back kills from Heinrich and Báez Rentas trimmed the deficit to 16-15. However, first-year Rachel Boudreau’s two blocks and one kill keyed a clinching 9-1 run.
