Cortland graduate student right-side hitter Zoe Staats (Buchanan/Hendrick Hudson) and sophomore middle blocker Alexa Guedez (Rye/Rye Neck) have been named the PrestoSports State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women’s Volleyball Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sept. 4. Staats is the league’s Offensive Athlete of the Week and Guedez is the Defensive Athlete of the Week.
Staats led Cortland with a combined 32 kills and had a .439 attack percentage in three matches as the Red Dragons went 3-0 at its own season-opening Red Dragon Classic. She started with 12 kills and just one error in 22 attempts in a 3-0 win over St. Lawrence, followed by 12 kills in a 3-1 win over Western New England and eight kills in a three-set win versus Hartwick.
Guedez totaled 10 blocks, six solo, over 10 sets during Cortland’s three victories. She had seven blocks (five solo), along with six kills, in a four-set win over Western New England and registered three blocks and three kills in a three-set win over Hartwick.
Cortland (3-0), which is among the “also receiving votes” section of the latest AVCA Division III national poll, returns to action this weekend with three matches at the Haverford College Ford Invitational. Cortland faces Springfield on Friday and Susquehanna and Haverford on Saturday. All three opponents, like Cortland, were NCAA Division III tournament participants last fall.
