Men’s Volleyball Splits on Saturday Afternoon to Open the 2023 Campaign

ST. DAVID, PA.  – The Elmira College men’s volleyball team opened its season with a split on the campus of Eastern University on Saturday. After falling in its season-opener to Marymount, the Soaring Eagles stormed back to finish the day even with a five-set victory over the Eagles. 

For the day, Oscar Munoz-Trinidad ’23 finished with 32 kills while in the cap, Alberto Mauricio ’25 recorded 19 of his own. The Soaring Eagles would fall to Marymount in five sets in the opener despite hitting .467 in the first set which they would drop 25-20.

Mauricio would finish the day with 33 kills to lead EC, while Jordan Peiser ’23 and Edwin Sosa ’25 rounded out the Purple & Gold attacking with 18 and 14 kills, respectively. Max Cohen ’25 paced Elmira from the setter position with 74 assists on the day, while Mauricio also tallied 8 service aces in the two matches. 

The Soaring Eagles would hit .311 as a team to grab its first victory of the season against Eastern, while reaching double-figure kills in four of its five sets. Paced by Mauricio who finished the day with 19, the Soaring Eagles would hit a game-best .429 in the third set which they won 25-11.
