CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Eric Johnson will join the Hurricanes Volleyball program as an assistant coach, Head Coach Jose Gandara announced Friday morning.

Johnson arrives in Coral Gables from American University, where he began as an assistant coach in August 2021.

Prior to his time at American, he had a four-year tenure at George Mason University. In addition to his career at George Mason, Johnson coached junior club teams in the greater Washington D.C. area.

“I’m super excited. Miami is an amazing program and Coach Keno is an amazing coach with tons of great experience. Miami is obviously an incredible academic institution in a beautiful location with a beautiful campus. This program is a high-level program that’s competing in one of the biggest conferences in college volleyball, and I’m willing to do whatever I can to help this program win championships,” assistant coach Eric Johnson said.

A native of Tustin, California, Johnson spent a decade as a player and coach with the Balboa Bay Volleyball Club, winning the 15 Open USAV National Championship in 2009.

Johnson’s playing career stems from Division III’s Springfield College, where he won NCAA National Championships in the 2013 and 2014 seasons. Johnson graduated from Springfield in 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in sports management while representing Team USA at the 2013 World University Games in Kazan, Russia.

“We are excited to add Eric to our program. Eric comes in with significant experience both as a player and a coach. He has worked under experienced mentors, brings a unique set of skills that complement our current staff and will upgrade our program from day one,” Head Coach Jose “Keno” Gandara said.
