ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Empire 8 Athletic Conference and the United Volleyball Conference announced its weekly award winners on Monday afternoon, as Dylan Vargas ’27 of the Soaring Eagles’ men’s volleyball earned Rookie of the Week for the Empire 8, and Co-Rookie of the Week honors for the UVC.
A first-year middle hitter from Mount Sinai, New York, recorded a .418 hitting percentage over three matches this past week at the Elmira Invitational. On Friday, Vargas collected a season-best 11 kills to go along with three block assists, a service ace, and a dig against Drew University.
In Elmira’s second match of the evening, Vargas would help Elmira to a four-set victory over SUNY Potsdam where he tallied nine kills and a .400 hitting percentage, while also recording a block assist and a solo block. The weekend concluded for Vargas with four kills against Kean, where he went for a season-high five total blocks, two of which were solo.
For the season, Vargas has not recorded a hitting percentage through five matches that is lower than .250, while his 13 total blocks leads the Soaring Eagles defense by six.
