Newberry, Whitmarsh Named UCLA Student-Athletes of Week, presented by Ready

Beach volleyball partners Devon Newberry and Jaden Whitmarsh have been selected the UCLA Student-Athletes of the Week, presented by Ready, for April 24-30.

The Bruin duo are undefeated on the year at 9-0 on court five and went 5-0 last week at the Pac-12 Championship, en route to All-Tournament honors. Newberry and Whitmarsh clinched all three duals for the Bruins on Championship Friday, taking down No. 3 USC in the contender’s bracket semifinal (3-0), avenging the Bruins’ loss to No. 8 Stanford in the contender’s bracket finals (3-0), and defeating No. 9 California in the title match (3-0). Their wins helped UCLA claim its third Pac-12 Championship (2018, 2021, 2023) in program history. Senior Newberry and graduate student Whitmarsh have been playing together this year for just the last three weeks due to an earlier injury to Newberry.

This is the duo’s first UCLA student-athlete of the week award of the season and of their career.
