THE FLATS — No. 13 Georgia Tech volleyball (9-2, 2-0 ACC) swept Virginia Tech (8-5, 1-1 ACC) to close out its first conference weekend on Sunday in O’Keefe Gymnasium. The win (25-21, 25-15, 25-15) marked the White and Gold’s 300th victory in O’Keefe Gymnasium as the Yellow Jackets earned their second consecutive ACC sweep and seventh sweep of the season.
Georgia Tech claimed both the second and third sets by double digits, resulting in a dominant performance on paper. The Yellow Jackets led the Hokies in kills (41-28), hitting percentage (.326-132), assists (37-24), aces (8-1), digs (42-31) and blocks (7-5).
Senior outside hitter Julia Bergmann returned to form with her sixth 20+ kill match on the year, tying her third most kills in a match this season. The decorated Yellow Jacket finished with 22 kills at a blistering .415 clip along with four digs, an ace and a block. Sophomore outside hitter Bianca Bertolino and senior middle blocker Erin Moss also pitched in across the board as both tallied a pair of blocks, with Bertolino tallying seven kills and 10 digs while Moss added eight kills at a .500 clip. Junior setter Bella D’Amico orchestrated the offense, resulting in 28 assists. Defensively, senior libero Paola Pimentel and graduate middle blocker Breland Morrissette anchored the Jackets as Pimentel totaled a match-high 13 digs while Morrissette topped the match with five blocks.
How it Happened
In a tightly contested first set, Georgia Tech put together a three-point burst to inch ahead, 10-8. The Yellow Jackets would extend their lead to as much as four, 15-11, as the two sides battled back and forth. Virginia Tech closed the gap to even the tally at 21, but the White and Gold finished off the set on a four-point run as back-to-back blocks by Morrissette and sophomore right-side hitter Laura Fischer secured a 25-21 set one win.
The Yellow Jackets raced in front early in the second set, taking 12 of 14 points to catapult into a 13-5 lead after an ace by Pimentel. Two more ensuing three-point runs fueled by three Georgia Tech aces boosted the White and Gold up to a double-digit advantage, leading 20-10 after back-to-back aces by Morrissette. Moss later closed out the set with a kill from the middle, handing the Jackets a 25-15 set two triumph.
The Hokies hung around in the third set, fighting out to a tie score line of 11-11. Georgia Tech would take the lead on the next point, however, maintaining the advantage for the rest of the set. The…
