COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes (16-5, 12-1 B1G) swept (25-22, 25-12, 25-18) RV Northwestern (17-8, 6-7 B1G) in Evanston on Friday night.
Ohio State scored three of the final four points in a close first set to earn the 25-22 set win. The Buckeyes dominated the second set, using a pair of early 4-0 runs to grab the 25-12 set win. After surrendering the first point of set three, OSU did not trail and sealed the sweep with a 25-18 set win.
How it Happened
Northwestern got on the board first, but Ohio State immediately answered. The set was tight early as the teams were tied at every point through 10-10. The Buckeyes scored four of the next five points to take a 14-11 lead on an ace from Sarah Sue Morbitzer, but the Wildcats used their largest run of the set to tie the set at 14. OSU regained the lead but NU tied the set again at 18. Northwestern took both of its timeouts as Ohio State scored the next three points to take the 21-18 lead. The Buckeyes capped the 25-22 set win with a kill from Gabby Gonzales.
The Wildcats opened scoring in the second set. The Buckeyes scored seven of the next eight points to take a 7-2 lead and force an NU timeout following a block from Rylee Rader and Emily Londot. Ohio State extended its advantage to 10-3 to force a second Northwestern timeout. The Buckeyes built the lead to 13-4 and then 16-6 out of the timeout. The Wildcats scored back-to-back points for the first time in the set to cut the deficit to 16-9. OSU put together a trio of 3-0 runs to earn the 25-12 set win on Jenaisya Moore’s 11th kill of the match.
NU scored first in the third set. OSU scored back-to-back points three times, but the Wildcats tied the set at six. A 4-1 Ohio State run prompted a Northwestern timeout with the Buckeyes in front by a 10-7 mark. A second 4-1 run extended OSU’s lead to 14-9 on an NU ball handling error. A kill and service ace by Rader pushed the Buckeyes’ lead to 18-12 to force a second Wildcats timeout. Ohio State’s lead was 21-14 before Northwestern was able to get within five at 22-17 and 23-18. Back-to-back Buckeye points sealed the sweep with a 25-18 win in set three.
