WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – As the final moments of January wrap up, Wake Forest volleyball has picked up strong accolades from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), as three Demon Deacons were named to the conference’s 2022 All-Academic Team, announced by the league office on Tuesday (Jan. 31).
Graduate setter Andrea Fuentes, junior defensive specialist Megan Merril, and junior hitter Ashley Slater all represented on the list. The honor was a first for Merril, while Fuentes and Slater have now landed all-academic selections for the second and third consecutive year, respectively. Slater is one of three all-time program players to have attained three such nods.
Tracing back to 2021-22, Wake Forest has now had three or more players earn ACC All-Academic honors in back-to-back years.
“This is a great honor for Andrea, Megan, and Ashley,” said head coach Randi Smart. “Wake’s student-athletes work tirelessly, and their dedication to their education and drive to succeed set our students apart. I am proud to be a part of this group. Congratulations to these three for their well-earned honor.”
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester, a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career and have played in at least 50 percent of the team’s contests.

Finishing as the team leader in assists for the second straight season, Fuentes additionally placed herself in the conference’s top-10 of individuals within that same statistical category. She also led Wake Forest in service aces (31) and was second in digs (202). Fuentes reached personal milestones throughout her final collegiate campaign, starting with a home match versus nationally-ranked Pittsburgh on Oct. 28 when she collected her 4,500th career assist. Just over two weeks later, the San Juan, Puerto Rico native passed the 1,500th mark in assists for her Demon Deacon tenure during a victory over Virginia Tech (Nov. 13). In total, Fuentes grabbed ten double-doubles and had five performances of 30 or more assists, along with three showings of 40 or more. She finished her career ranked ninth all-time in total assists (1,709) throughout program history and eighth in assists-per-set average (8.50), doing so in only two seasons with the Black and Old Gold.
