USC ousts BYU in MPSF; Charleston scores EIVA upset; Vegas wins in Pro Volleyball

Jack Deuchar went off for a career-high 30 kills and sixth-seeded USC knocked third-seeded BYU out of the MPSF Championship. It sets up Thursday’s semifinals at USC pitting the Trojans vs. top-seeded UCLA and Wednesday’s two winners, Grand Canyon vs. Stanford.

There was a huge upset in the EIVA semifinals as last-place and sixth-seeded Charleston not only beat third-seeded Princeton, but swept the Tigers. Charleston plays second-seeded George Mason on Thursday, while top-seeded Penn State gets fifth-seeded Harvard, which beat fourth-seeded NJIT.

The MIVA semifinals are Thursday with top-seeded Ball State facing No. 4 Lindenwood and second-seeded Loyola Chicago vs. third-seeded Ohio State.

The Big West Championship gets underway with quarterfinals in Hawai’i, the SIAC tourney gets underway at Edward Waters and the NEC tourney continues.

There was one Pro Volleyball Federation match Wednesday as the Vegas Thrill swept the Columbus Fury.

NCAA men

MPSF: USC (13-14) won a wild one in ousting BYU 30-32, 29-27, 25-23, 18-25, 15-12.

Deuchar had 30 kills and eight errors in 54 attacks to hit .407 and had an assist, four aces, a block and seven digs. Dillon Klein had 12 kills, three blocks and nine digs. Kyle Paulson had 10 kills in 15 errorless swings, an ace, two blocks and four digs, and Riley Haine had nine kills, an assist, a block and five digs. setter Caleb Blanchette had a career-best 61 assists as USC hit .343 and both teams had six aces and 22 serving errors.

BYU, which ended its season 16-9, got 25 kills from Luke Benson, who hit .465 and had an ace, four digs and two blocks, one solo. Miks Ramanis had 19 kills, hit .325 and had three aces, five digs and three blocks, one solo. Kupono Browne added 14 kills, three assists, a block and nine digs. BYU hit .353.

UCLA (22-4) has beaten USC twice this season, sweeping on February 29 at USC and winning in four March 2 at ULCA. 

GCU (23-4) swept Concordia Irvine (6-19) as the Lopes hit .364 in a 25-19, 27-25, 25-22 victory. Camden Gianni led with 16 kills, hitting .324, to go with two blocks and six digs. Jarrett Anderson had 14 kills, hit .435, and had three of his team’s four aces, two blocks and three digs. Nicholas Slight had a kill, 47 assists, two blocks and four digs.
