Des Moines, IA – The Vikings entered Tuesday’s matchup against Clarke University on a mission that they accomplished. Through a great team effort, they were able to secure a three-set sweep Tuesday evening. The Vikings took down Clarke with sets scores of 25-11, 25-11, & 25-18.
Set 1: Grand View University 25 | Clarke University 11
The Vikings set the tone early as they quickly jumped out to a 5-1 lead. Bayron Valdez (JR/Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) added another kill before getting back-to-back aces. He wasn’t the only one finding the right spots with his serves as Zeo Meyer (JR/Wheaton, IL ) added a pair of his own aces. The Vikings weren’t just scoring on offense as Nicholas Vattier and Nickolas Lima (FR/Curitiba, Brazil ) combined for a block, just before Daniel Wong (SR/Campbell, CA ) added his own. Meyer and Vattier added kills just before Wong recorded an ace to end the first set in favor of the Vikings, 25-11.
Set 2: Grand View University 25 | Clarke University 11
The second set started just like the first set with a fast start for the Vikings led by two Daniel Galili (SO/Shomrat, Israel) kills assisted by Zeo Meyer. Bayron also got in on the early scoring when he got his first kill also assisted by Meyer. Daniel Wong also got a pair of kills to help put the Vikings up 7, 10-3. Valdez was able to tack on a kill before Clarke was forced to take a timeout. Wong got the Vikings going after the timeout with a big kill to spark a run. Meyer added a pair of aces late in the set to position the Vikings in the right spot to close the set-out. That was followed up by kills from Vattier and Nickolas Lima before Wong delivered the final kill. Vikings take set number 25-11.
Set 3: Grand View University 25 | Clarke University 18
As the final set of the match began, we saw the Vikings jump out to a lead and never looked back. After a Clarke error, Wong and Vattier picked up kills that would spark a Vikings run to put them up by 5, 8-3. Brendan Edgington (SR/Ankeny, IA ) got in on the action as he picked up a kill assisted by Meyer which was followed up by Erick Villar Cordero (SR/Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) getting his own kill. Gioele Iacono (SO/Milan, Italy ) and Michael Meachem (JR/Mesa, AZ ) both picked up kills as the match began to come to an end.
