Vikings Fall to Statesmen in Regular Season Finale

Oskaloosa. IA – The Grand View women’s volleyball team traveled to Oskaloosa, Iowa to take on William Penn in its regular season final on Tuesday night. The Vikings ultimately fell to the Statesmen in straight sets by scores of 19-25, 26-28, and 18-25.

Set 1: Grand View University 19 l William Penn University 25

The Vikings gained an early advantage over the Statesmen to start out the night after a 3-0 scoring run and back-to-back kills from Alesha Johnson (JR/Council Bluffs, IA) and Ellie Dougherty (FR/Omaha, NE) put the score at 11-7. Over the course of the middle stage of the set, William Penn chipped away at the Grand View lead, but the Vikings remained ahead at the 18-16 mark behind a Rylie Olson (SR/Osage, IA) kill. The momentum of the set completely flipped shortly after at the 19-18 point when William Penn rattled off a 7-0 scoring run to take the set.

Set 2: Grand View University 26 l William Penn University 28

Grand View started out the second set with another lead as a service ace by Peyton Cook (SO/Underwood, IA) put the Vikings up by two, 9-7. The Statesmen jumped ahead by one a few points later and then the two squads traded points back-and-forth until the 20-22 point. Taylor Carey (SR/Waukee, IA) was able to give the Vikings the lead again following her kill to make it 24-23, but the Statesmen prevailed down the stretch and claimed the second set.

Set 3: Grand View University 18 l William Penn University 25

The third set saw a slow start from the Vikings as they fell behind 4-11. The Vikings struggled to make up any ground as the set progressed, but the deficit remained at seven after Dougherty scored another kill to make it 12-19. The Statesmen were able to keep the Vikings at bay for the remainder of the set and closed out the match on a Grand View service error.

Ellie Dougherty was the top-scorer for the Vikings offensively as she totaled 11 kills on the night. Defensively, Chevy Wagner-Chun (JR/Waianae, HI) provided 22 digs.
