Wayne Hellquist, former World ParaVolley vice-president and towering figure in Saskatchewan’s volleyball community, has been announced as one of the distinguished inductees into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2024.
The announcement marked a momentous occasion for Hellquist, whose remarkable contributions to the sport have left have significantly impacted the athletic scene.
Hailing from North Battleford, his journey through sport has been nothing short of extraordinary. As a player, coach, administrator and leader, he has consistently exemplified excellence and dedication.
Throughout his illustrious career, Hellquist has served as a board member and executive at both the national and provincial levels, playing a pivotal role in establishing Regina as the centralised training hub for the Canadian women’s national volleyball team during the 1980s.
Beyond his administrative duties, Hellquist has been a driving force behind the expansion of volleyball opportunities for athletes of all abilities. His instrumental role in creating the paravolley programme underscores his belief in the power of sport to foster inclusivity and empowerment.
Furthermore, Hellquist’s impact extends to the international stage, where he served as Chef de Mission for the Canadian Paralympic team in 2000.
