Henson and Wilcock Named AVCA National Pair of the Week


 

SEATTLE On Monday, Zoey Henson and Lauren Wilcock were named American Volleyball Coaches Association National Pair of the Week. This is the second time in program history that a Beach Dawgs pair has won the award. Chloe Loreen and Natalie Robison won the award last year for the first time ever.

 

Henson and Wilcock helped give the Beach Dawgs their highest-ranked victory in program history after taking down No. 7 California on Saturday.

 

Henson and Lauren posted a perfect weekend from the No. 2 spot, helping the team notch three wins against No. 7 California, No. 12 Arizona State, and Oregon. The duo also was the one Husky pair to win against No. 2 Stanford in a 4-1 loss.

 

The pair opened the first home tournament, taking down the higher-ranked Sun Devils. The dynamic duo won two straight sets after dropping the first one 17-21. The duo jumped out to a lead in the second set and never lost it, winning 21-15. Henson and Wilcock landed consecutive aces during a 5-1 run in the second set. The duo followed up the tremendous second-set win with an even better 15-5 win in the third set.

 

The duo won two straight sets for the second match in a row after dropping the first one to Stanford. Henson and Wilcock responded to every one of Stanford’s attacks. They were tied 7-7 before they pulled ahead to win 21-16 in the second set. The duo went back and forth before the Dawgs pulled ahead 15-13 in the third set, giving Lauren Wilcock her 50th career win.

 

The pair followed up the two wins on Friday with the record-setting victory against the Bears. They jumped out to a lead in the first set and held on to it. The duo started out hot jumping out to a three point lead. They held their three-point lead until 19-16. Then, they scored two consecutive points to close out the first match for the Dawgs 21-16.

 

Later that afternoon, while battling the elements, the Dawgs extended their winning streak against the Oregon Ducks to five with a 5-0 victory. Rain had been pounding Alki Beach throughout the day, making conditions challenging for the athletes.

 

Henson and Wilcock dispatched their Pacific Northwest rival to stay perfect for the weekend. The pair jumped ahead after a 7-7 tie and won 21-12. In the second set, the Ducks kept the score close until the Huskies went on a 7-0 run, pushing the lead to eight and holding that margin till the end.

Wilcock and Henson are 9-6 on the season and the Huskies sit at 12-10 as a team. The Beach…
